Women's Futsal SuperLeague path laid out

The path to glory for the best female futsal players in the country has been unveiled with the release of the draw for the Women’s Futsal SuperLeague.

The competition will take place at the ASB Sports Centre in Wellington from 14 to 16 February and will bring six teams together – Northern Lights, Auckland, WaiBOP, Central, Capital and Canterbury United Pride.

All will be looking to wrestle the title off Canterbury, who lifted the trophy last year with a perfect record after winning all six of their matches.

It was a clean sweep for the Pride as they also picked up all three individual honours on offer.

Macey Fraser claimed the golden boot with seven goals while Serena Patel was named the tournament’s MVP. The efforts of Hannah Hegarty in goal also did not go unnoticed as she received the golden glove.

Canterbury’s closest challenger last time out was Capital, whom they defeated 3-1 in the final.

Third-placed Northern Lights missed out on a place in the final by three points while Central were just a point further back. But the real surprise was the form of defending champions Auckland, who went in as favourites but finished ahead of only WaiBOP after failing to win a match, earning just three points from a trio of draws.

Auckland will be looking to bounce back and re-emerge as a serious title threat this year while the other teams will be just as determined to challenge Canterbury, meaning a fiercely-fought and entertaining tournament is likely to be in store.
