Team Wellington have announced the appointment of Scott Hales as new head coach ahead of the upcoming 2019/20 ISPS Handa Premiership season.

The appointment of Hales follows a thorough recruitment process led by Team Wellington chairman Peter Chote and other members of the board.

As an Advanced Coach Educator for New Zealand Football, Hales brings a wealth of knowledge to the role and also holds an OFC/NZF A Licence.

Chote is looking forward to a new chapter with Hales at the helm.

“Scott has been instrumental in bringing success to Team Wellington and we are all excited by this appointment,” he says.

“During the recruitment process Scott was able to articulate a clear vision of the culture and playing philosophy he sees for the franchise moving forward. Having been involved in the Team Wellington set up previously, it allows for some consistency and a seamless transition.”

Hales was delighted to sign and is looking forward to the season ahead.

“I’ve been involved with the club over the past three years and we’ve enjoyed immense success during that time which I am proud to have been a part of,” he says.

“Continuity is the key for us. I don’t see this as a rebuild but an opportunity to refresh and return to winning ways.”

Hales describes himself as a hands-on coach and believes getting out on the pitch with the players is where the magic happens.

“Nothing puts you in touch with your players quite like being out there with them,” he says.

“I’m looking to develop Team Wellington as a genuine aspiration for local players. Nationally, Team Wellington are a flagship club but locally, we hold the important role of providing access to opportunities for players in the wider Wellington region.”

Hales will officially commence in his role on 1 September.
