Tyler Bindon’s rise from East Coast Bays to the English Premier League is a remarkable journey that highlights the untapped potential within New Zealand’s footballing community. At just 20 years old, Bindon has already earned 13 international caps for New Zealand and, in February 2025, made the leap to Premier League giants Nottingham Forest from Reading FC.
Weeks after securing the move, Tyler was recognised at the prestigious Halberg Awards where we was presented the Best Emerging Talent award.
His achievement is not only a personal milestone but also a proud moment for the club that first nurtured his talents: East Coast Bays.
“It’s an amazing achievement. We're really excited for Tyler,” says East Coast Bays representative Jonny Gaze. “We’ve followed his progress from Bays through to LAFC, Reading, and now Nottingham Forest. It gives the younger players something real to aspire to, that anything is possible.”
Bindon’s journey began at East Coast Bays when he was just 13. Even then, his talent was evident. After moving to the United States, he developed at LAFC’s academy before making the move to Reading, where he continued to flourish on the pitch. A key factor in his rise has been his relentless drive and determination, qualities he demonstrated from a young age. "Tyler had a mentality and desire to achieve great things from a young age," says Gaze. "He worked hard every day to improve. His natural athletic ability was there, but it was his grit and willingness to learn that truly set him apart."
Bindon’s early years at East Coast Bays were defined by his technical skills and intelligence on the field. Under the guidance of coaches such as Dave Wood, Joe and Connor Daw, and Russell Fisher, Bindon developed a strong foundation. But it was his commitment and passion that allowed him to stand out. His ability to read the game, make precise passes, and score goals distinguished him from his peers. "His potential was clear to see from an early age," recalls Gaze. "He was the best player in Auckland for his age group."
Throughout his youth, Bindon stood out not only for his skill but also for his leadership on and off the pitch. Known for always playing with a smile and supporting his teammates, Bindon became a role model for his peers. "Tyler was a real leader, even at a young age. He always looked for the right pass, was strong on both feet, and created opportunities for his teammates.. He was destined to be a professional athlete,” says Gaze.
Now, as Bindon looks to make his mark in the Premier League, his success has already had a lasting impact on East Coast Bays’ youth program. "If you see it, you can be it," Gaze says, emphasizing how Bindon’s journey serves as a tangible example for the current generation of players at East Coast Bays. His rise to the Premier League provides a concrete motivator, showing that hard work and dedication can lead to success at the highest level.
East Coast Bays continues to prioritize developing young talent, offering programs that focus on both technical skills and a love for the game. From the Mini Bays (ages 5-8) to the senior men’s and women’s teams, the club provides multiple pathways for players to progress. While Tyler’s journey is uniquely his own, it stands as a testament to the potential within East Coast Bays and the broader New Zealand football community.
