The Ford Football Ferns secured their biggest win in Aotearoa in 12 years on Saturday, defeating Thailand in Ōtautahi Christchurch at Apollo Projects Stadium.

The victory saw Jitka Klimková’s team go to six wins in six and they will be looking to make it seven when they face the same side again in the second match of the series on Tuesday night.

After not registering a shot on target at the weekend, Thailand will be looking to put in a better showing in the garden city.

Likely Team:

Klimková selected a strong line-up for the first match with nine of the eleven who started having played during the FIFA Women’s World Cup.

At the pre-match press conference it was confirmed that the full squad took part in the final training session so there are no injury concerns going into the game.

One player who will be pushing for a starting spot is Sunderland’s Katie Kitching who in a 30 minute cameo off the bench set up one and scored two of the Ferns goals in the first match.

The game could also see a Ferns debut for 19-year-old Emma Pijnenburg who joined up with the squad after Kate Taylor withdrew through injury.

Head coach Jitka Klimková on the first performance

We feel good. I think the performance we showed our fans, families and friends was very good, it was quality.

But we want more. We want to keep pushing, we want to keep evolving this team and we were focusing today on little tidy ups that we can do tomorrow and have an even better performance.

Player to Watch: Saowalak Peng-ngam

The 27-year-old forward will be responsible for leading the line for the Thai team and will be one of the major goal threats if Thailand want to reverse Saturday’s result.
