Is Auckland City v Birkenhead United the early season title decider?

This weekend, the men’s National League Championship sees the top two go head-to-head in what could be a hugely influential game come the end of the season.

Early front runners Auckland City and Birkenhead United both have 100%-win records from their first two games, two points clear of Auckland United in 3rd.

Birkenhead, who sit top on goal difference, have been the league’s top scorers so far after their 3:1 win over Christchurch United and 4:2 win over Miramar Rangers. For Auckland City, the story is at the other end of the pitch with the Navy Blues only conceding once in their 2:1 win over Wellington Olympic and 2:0 win over Cashmere Technical.

But who is favourite this weekend?

Going on their form from the Northern League, it’s no contest. While both sides finished as the top two, Auckland City claimed the title 11 points clear of 2nd place. Auckland City also won both games they played, with a 3:0 win a Kiwitea Street and a 5:3 win at Shepherds Park.

But this isn’t the regional phase. Just ask Miramar Rangers who sit bottom of the table despite being one of the dominant sides in the Central League.

So who are the players to watch on each side this weekend?

Birkenhead United – Dane Schnell

Midfielder Dane Schnell scored 5 goals during the Northern League season but is already on two from two for the National League Championship.

The former U20 international has established himself as part of a strong Birkenhead group of midfielders, including experienced captain Sam Burfoot, after his move from Western Springs.

Auckland City – Ryan De Vries

Former All White Ryan De Vries returned to Auckland City at the start of the year after stints in Japan and Ireland.

With strong competition for the forward positions at Auckland City (such as club legend and top scorer Emiliano Tade), De Vries didn’t always start every game in the regional phase but has started and scored in both National League Championship games so far.
