Cup finals bring top football

Football fans will be treated to some of the best football the domestic game has to offer this Sunday when the finals of both the ISPS Handa Chatham Cup and NZ Football Foundation Kate Sheppard Cup are held at North Harbour Stadium in Auckland.

The Chatham Cup is one of the oldest and most sought-after trophies in New Zealand men’s sport while the Kate Sheppard Cup is the highest prize on offer to female club teams throughout the country.

The latest edition of the Chatham Cup brings together Hamilton’s Melville United and Napier City Rovers, who have contrasting recent histories in the competition.

Melville are yet to lift the cup in their current form and last made the final back in 2003 while Napier are four-time winners and will be appearing in their third final in just nine years.

There could also be a new name on the trophy in the Kate Sheppard Cup final, in which Coastal Spirit are travelling up from Christchurch to take on Auckland’s Eastern Suburbs.

Spirit have won the cup once before, in 2013, and were also beaten finalists two years earlier while Eastern Suburbs have made the final twice, in 2005 and 2017, but are yet to claim the trophy.

The NZ Football Foundation Kate Sheppard Cup final kicks off at 12pm while the ISPS Handa Chatham Cup final takes place from 3pm, entry is $10 for adults while children under 16 are free.

For those unable to make it to North Harbour Stadium, both matches will be shown live on SKY Sport.
