NZ Masters Games about to hit Dunedin

The Otago Community Trust New Zealand Masters Games, the country's largest multisport event, comes to Dunedin this February.

The Games are held annually and alternate between Dunedin and Wanganui. More than 4,000 people will compete this year in a variety of sports, with entrants coming from all corners of New Zealand and even countries as far ranging as Canada, Sri Lanka, and Sweden.

Athletes do not need to be at an elite level to compete at the Games and there is no qualification required to enter the events.

Athletes must meet the minimum age requirements that vary from sport to sport, anyone can register – whether to win, to beat your personal best, or to just have fun.

With a large variety of team sports, there's a huge focus on camaraderie and making new friends.

Football is always one of the most popular events at the Masters Games, and this year will be no exception with Football South preparing to host around 50 teams entered across the various age grades.

There are three Men's grades, with minimum ages of 35+, 45+, and 50+. For Women, the minimum age is 30+. The football matches will be held at Logan Park, right in the heart of the Masters Games action with the Games Village at the nearby University Union.

"The Master’s Games is a great tournament that brings a lot of excitement and energy to the region, as well as rekindling many relationships and rivalries," said Football South CEO Chris Wright. "We love the buzz around the city during the event and I’m sure we’ll see some great games across the coming weekends."

In addition to the football events, a popular inclusion this year is the Futsal competitions for Men and Women. Minimum ages for this fast-paced sport are 30 for Men, and 25 for Women, with all matches held at the indoor Edgar Centre facility.

There are opening and closing ceremonies for the Games, and medals are awarded for all events.

Along with the sporting events, there is plenty of entertainment scheduled for the athletes, supporters, and volunteers to enjoy. Entertainment across the nine days includes concerts, comedy shows, a quiz night, and a casino night - each night is an event in its own right.
