Northern Region Football, with the support of New Zealand Football, hosted a free Pasifika Community Referee Course at the Manukau Institute of Technology Otara campus on April 5.
The initiative is part of a wider commitment to making football more inclusive – specifically by increasing the number of referees from historically under-represented communities.
For Auckland and Northland’s growing Pasifika population, the course offered a welcoming environment for learning and connection.
A total of ten Pasifika participants took part in the course, gaining valuable insight into the foundations of refereeing and pathways into the game.
Guest speaker and community referee Sarge Sharma spoke at the event to “give back to my community, lead by example and show that training to become a referee is possible at any age.
“Such spaces promote inclusivity and better access to opportunities that otherwise would go amiss. Pacific people prefer to learn together so having a dedicated space where they feel a sense of belonging is great – they feel more comfortable expressing themselves.”
Clendon United AFC President, Fetuaoina Ah-Young, attended the course.
“Anyone can do it,” says Ah-Young. "It is important to understand that there is a pathway—to have a voice and represent Pasifika players and community.”
He added that the opportunity to share stories and lived experiences was one of the most powerful parts of the course.
“One of the Fijian referees who came in—we had a small chat regarding his journey. The more stories we can share, the more Pasifika people can relate to consider this opportunity.”
"This course is about more than just refereeing," says Lindsey Robinson, New Zealand Football Referee Development Manager. “It’s about uplifting our Pasifika whānau, recognising the leadership that already exists in our communities, and opening doors in the game we all love.
"Refereeing is a powerful way to give back, to represent, and to lead with pride."
