2022 Congress: Wood re-elected, annual report passed

The 2022 Annual Congress of New Zealand Football was held yesterday, which saw president Johanna Wood re-elected.

Wood was re-elected for a second term as both New Zealand Football president as well as Executive Committee (ExCo) member, while Scott Moran was elected as vice president.

The newly-elected members to the New Zealand Football Executive Committee are Julian Bowden and Rajesh Singh. Riann Umaga-Marshall (Ngāi te Rangi, Whakatōhea, Tūhourangi) was voted onto the Executive Committee, having been co-opted to ExCo in August 2021.

“We’re pleased to welcome Julian Bowden and Rajesh Singh to the board,” says Wood.

“They bring important perspectives to the Executive Committee and we are fortunate to have their expertise on board.”

As a former CEO of Mainland Football, Bowden is a familiar name to football in Aotearoa New Zealand, especially in Canterbury. He was part of the group that worked on the Delivery and Sustainability Project, particularly around the National League System.

Currently CEO of Equestrian Sport New Zealand, Bowden also has governance experience as the board chair of Christchurch Girls High School for the last three years.

Rajesh Singh comes to New Zealand Football with a background in commercial, finance and innovation. He is currently general manager – value management at Spark NZ, and chairs the Spark NZ subsidiaries Connect 8 and Telelogistics.

New Zealand Football continues to maintain 40% female representation on the Executive Committee first achieved in 2020 and in line with the Sport NZ target.

Wood also paid tribute to outgoing ExCo members Garry Carnachan and Bob Patterson.

“On behalf of the Executive Committee, I’d like to thank Garry for his contribution to New Zealand Football. He joined ExCo in 2018 at what was a challenging time and has played an important role in implementing the Muir Report recommendations. I’d also like to acknowledge in particular his work around the Secondary School Age Working Group.

“I would also like to thank Bob Patterson for his contribution to the game, as he retires after two years of service on ExCo, as well as being a former Auckland Football chair.”

The financial statements were approved by Congress with an operating surplus of $2.7m for the financial year ended 31 December 2021, while the reserves remain strong at $11.4m.
