Auckland City FC faces one of the toughest challenges in its history after the FIFA Club World Cup draw placed the Navy Blues alongside some of the biggest names in world football.
With the tournament set to begin in the USA between June 15 and July 13 next year, the club prepares to represent Oceania football on the global stage with excitement.
The draw has paired Auckland City FC with world-renowned clubs such as Bayern Munich, Boca Juniors, and SL Benfica, each boasting decades of success, international superstars, and vastly superior resources.
Bayern Munich is a six-time UEFA Champions League winner, with players like Harry Kane and Jamal Musiala leading their squad.
Boca Juniors, an Argentinian powerhouse, brings a proud history of Copa Libertadores triumphs and a fervent fanbase.
Portugal's SL Benfica is a cornerstone of European football, celebrated for historic European Cup victories and a world-class academy that consistently produces global talents.
Competing against such giants highlights the stark differences between professional juggernauts and Auckland City FC, a New Zealand club with its feet firmly planted in the amateur ranks of its domestic competition.
While other teams operate with massive budgets, state-of-the-art facilities, and participation in elite leagues, Auckland City FC represents a unique story from Oceania to the international stage.
Club General Manager Gordon Watson, speaking from Miami alongside assistant coach and former All Whites international Ivan Vicelich, shared his reflections on the FIFA Club World Cup draw:
“The draw itself is a landmark moment for Auckland City FC — it is a victory in its own right. It represents the culmination of 20 years of relentless hard work by everyone associated with the club to turn a dream into reality.
"Our story resonates not just with football fans but with people from all walks of life. Like them, our players juggle regular jobs, train nearly every day, and play over 50 matches a year, driven by sheer passion and commitment.
"Our volunteers and club members, who have worked tirelessly behind the scenes for decades, deserve immense credit. Today’s draw is a celebration of their unwavering dedication and desire to see this club succeed.
"This is also a unique opportunity for the wider football community in New Zealand. From New Zealand Football to grassroots clubs, this story reflects the collective resilience, history, and identity of our game.
"Representing Mount Roskill, Mount Albert, Sandringham, and all corners of our domestic football pyramid—including the wider Pacific region—is both a privilege and a responsibility.
"It’s a chance to learn from the best, to show what our club stands for, and to inspire players and fans alike to chase their dreams," Watson said.
Auckland City FC enters the tournament as underdogs but with a commitment to competing with heart and determination.
The club views the event as an opportunity to showcase the values of New Zealand football and gain invaluable experience against the world’s finest.
Vicelich said: "This is a truly historic day for the club, and it’s incredible to see Auckland City FC’s name alongside giants like Bayern Munich, SL Benfica, and Boca Juniors.
"Our journey to this moment started four years ago, and reaching the pinnacle of the club game is an emotional milestone for everyone who has sacrificed and worked so hard to get here.
"The players, coaches, and everyone involved with the club have earned this opportunity, and now it’s up to us to make the most of it on the world stage.
"While the gap in resources and financial scale is significant and undeniable, our focus will be on meticulous preparation and maximising every moment from now until next year."
